Would you adopt a cabbage??

... or a coconut?
... or a mango?

You probably wouldn't, would you. It doesn't have quite the same appeal as sponsoring a child, or making a microloan over the web. The idea isn't going to compel you to click the 'Like' button or retweet to your followers - it doesn't quite have the same appeal as the Kony2012 video!

Farmers in the Philippines are the lowest paid workers in that country, and almost 80 per cent of the estimated 30 million poor in the Philippines (one third of the population) live in rural areas. So what if you want to help them? Ok, so adopt-a-coconut probably isn't the best idea.

So how's this for a better one? A program that gives you the chance to experience farming life first hand. The chance to help improve the lives of farmers and contribute to development in the Philippines through your own actions. The chance to learn about how fresh, organic produce is grown - and the satisfaction of cooking delicious regional dishes using produce you've helped grow yourself.

How does that sound?

Well, with Bukid Buddies farmstay program, you can do all that. We give you the chance to spend anywhere from a week to three months living and working with farming families who are part of our Farm-to-You organic produce service, which provides fresh produce direct to subscribers - usually the same day it's harvested. The service cuts out the middlemen, ensuring greater income for the farmers and at the same time providing great fresh food for people in the city. And once you've finished your farm stay, you have the option to take a one or two-week cooking course back in Manila - learning all the fantastic dishes you can make from the produce you've grown.

  1. Hi Guys - great idea to get first hand work experience - I think your goals could really be encanced by considering the "Kibbutz" model which has been successfully running for over 60 years in Israel. It has Government support and has been a great way for Israel to develop at an exponential rate - check out http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=kibbutz+life+in+israel&oq=kibbutz+&gs_l=youtube.3.1.0l10.766.3221.0.7190.10.7.1.1.1.0.642.2048.1j2j2j5-2.7.0...0.0...1ac.1.11.youtube.duGWBP8ZYGM

They have managed to solve many issues including but not limited to:
    - increase tourism

    - free board and food based on free work provided by volunteer

This Kibbutz system has become a Social Engineering feat for Israel where many other countries could also benefit. This model could certainly be applied here too. Good luck with it ! outstanding job !

    1. Thanks, I hadn't thought about the Kibbutz system before but can definitely see the parallels. It would be interesting to look at the techniques that are used to encourage people to volunteer on a Kibbutz and see whether there were lessons we could draw in building a social marketing strategy around our Bukid Buddies volunteer program. There are definite similarities in terms of the tribes being targeted (e.g. young people wanting to do community service but also looking for an adventure) and what would appeal to them - I noticed some of the YouTube videos you linked to focused very much on the 'fun side' of the experience for example
